Sir John Armitt paid a visit to Ebbsfleet Garden City shortly after it was announced in the budget that he was the new chairman of Thames Estuary 2050 Growth Commission.

Sir John made the Garden City was one of his first visits and saw the progress being made here as well as looking at the Ebbsfleet Garden City Information Centre at Ebbsfleet International.

The Commission will develop an ambitious vision and delivery plan for North Kent, South Essex and East London up to 2050. This will focus on supporting the development of high productivity clusters in specific locations. It will examine how the area can develop, attract and retain skilled workers. It will also look at how to make the most of opportunities from planned infrastructure such as the Lower Thames Crossing.

Sir John was from 2007 Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, the body which successfully built the venues, facilities and infrastructure for the 2012 Olympic Games. He was President of the Institution of Civil Engineers for 2015–16, having been a vice-president since 2012.
