There’s no doubt that engineering is a great industry to get into.

And we have been welcoming future engineers  from across Kent at our Springhead Bridge construction site so that they get some hands on experience before they join the world of work.

Along with Balfour Beatty, who are building the bridge for us, we have so far had more than ten students on site.

And Balfour Beatty has engaged with more than 2,000 students so far about the project.

University course

BEng. (Hons.) Civil Engineering – University of Greenwich (based at Medway Campus)

Finished degree (end of third year).

What do you want to do when you leave?

Start a yearlong master’s degree at University College London (UCL) – MSc. Civil Engineering with Integrated Design. I hope to get a summer work placement prior to starting these masters.

I hope to go into engineering design, working on buildings after finishing my master’s degree.

Why do you want to do this?

I have friends who have had good experiences of working in design consultancies. My personal experience of studying has provided me with a lot of technical knowledge of building design. I want to use this knowledge in a real-world setting.

What is it about this career that interests you?

I enjoy design & engineering and the design buildings is the area I am most familiar with.

What have you taken from your work experience placement on Springhead Bridge?

It has been a very positive experience. At university you are taught the theory, but it’s good to come out on site and see it in practice.

I was particularly interested in the BIM integrated system used by the Balfour Beatty engineers to located and store the data about the bridge and how this information could be retrieved using an iPad whilst out on site.

University course

BEng. (Hons.) Civil Engineering – University of Greenwich (based at Medway Campus)

End of second year, one year remaining.

What do you want to do when you leave?

Undecided yet, I want to see how third year goes and then I’ll see what I want to do.

Why do you want to do this?

It is difficult to decide what direction you want to go after second year, however gaining site experience at Springhead Bridge has been useful for me. It has shown me that I would like to work in a site-based role and then perhaps move into a design consultancy when I have gained a bit more practical experience.

What have you taken from your work experience placement on Springhead Bridge?

I have learnt a lot about how a bridge is built and all the many process that go into its construction. This is the first time I have been on site and seen a structure under construction. This experience will help me in my final year.
