During this challenging time, generous donations from Get Active in Ebbsfleet participants continue to be a great source of funds for local charities. One such donor, Andrea, recently gifted 100,000 BetterPoints to Air Ambulance Kent, Surrey & Sussex. We wanted to hear about her experiences with the BetterPoints app and why she decided to make the donation.

How long have you been using the BetterPoints app?

“I’ve been using the app for over three years now. Admittedly I wasn’t sure about it at first, but after seeing it on the news I realised it was serving a good purpose of getting people active and living healthily.”

What benefits, if any, have you noticed from using the app?

“It has led me to lead a more active lifestyle. I also find that I think more about my travel choices now. I ask myself whether I need to take the car, especially for short trips. It makes more sense to walk and earn some points for my journeys.”

How have you managed to get active and accumulate the points you have?

“I am now part of a local running club, so I’ve been earning rewards for my runs. Plus, I got a puppy at the start of lockdown which meant I was doing plenty of walks as well. So, before I knew it I had racked up a lot of points very quickly!

With the automatic tracking switched on, you can earn a lot of points without even realising.”

What was your motivation for donating the points?

“Initially I was thinking about spending them on high-street vouchers but thought that a charity would put the money to better use. It is hard for charities to generate the funds they need at the best of times, let alone in a pandemic. So, considering that earning the points hadn’t cost me anything, I thought to give them as a donation.

I chose Air Ambulance Kent, Surrey and Sussex because my daughter works as a paramedic so knows first-hand what incredible work they do. My dad is on the app and he made a points donation as well. He contacted the Air Ambulance and they were very appreciative.

I will definitely donate more points in future. It couldn’t be easier to donate on the app and you also don’t need to be the most active person to earn plenty of points, so I would encourage others to do the same.”

A big thanks to Andrea for sharing her story. However big or small, points donations can really make a difference to charities listed on the BetterPoints app. They are easy to achieve too:

How can I donate my BetterPoints?

  1. Track your active travel journeys in and around Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley
  2. Collect your BetterPoints
  3. Select ‘donate’, search for the charity you would like to donate towards and then the amount of BetterPoints (1,000 BetterPoints is equal to £1).
