Despite joining the Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge a couple of years ago, Jacqui didn’t fully engage with the BetterPoints app until lockdown occurred. Now, it is a key support in her mission to ‘pummel the pavement’ in order to lose weight and improve her wellbeing. Here is what she had to say.
How often were you getting physically active before you came across the Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge?
“At most 3 times a week. When I started working from home during lockdown, I wasn’t getting active at all.
I realised after the first few weeks I needed to exercise more to sort out my wellbeing.
At this point I was already registered to BetterPoints having learnt about it at the ‘Beating the Bounds’ charity walk a couple of years ago, led by the Mayor of Gravesham.
After using the app initially, I forgot to check it for about a year. However, it turns out it was tracking my journeys in the background, so I was still earning rewards!
I was going through my phone apps one day and I came across it, where I realised I had accumulated a good number of points. This made me think I should start using it regularly, which I have done so ever since.”
How has using the BetterPoints app helped you to get active? What do you like about it?
“I set myself the target of doing 2 to 3km of walking a day and the app has helped me to achieve that. I’m always checking the minutes and distances I’m clocking up each week, to try and improve for the following week.
I enjoy all of the in-app challenges like Spring into Action, which encouraged me to go for walks at lunchtime and in the afternoon as well as my regular morning walk, to earn extra points.
It helps me to push myself, so that whatever the weather I will be out there getting active.
It has been a motivator to have a go at other exercise challenges too. For example, I successfully did a ‘100 mile in a month’ challenge with my friends. I was able to redeem some Tesco vouchers with the points I earned from that.”
How have your levels of activity changed (if at all)?
“I recently had a bit of surgery which set me back a bit, but now I’m up to averaging 800 minutes of walking, 7 days a week.
I’ll now walk to my local supermarket, or into town to get my nails done or attend a personal training session.
I have neighbours who drive to the same supermarket, and I ask myself ‘why drive when you can walk?’”
What benefits have you noticed as a result?
“I set myself the target of losing 14kg this year and I’ve managed 12kg so far, through a combination of personal training and ‘pummelling the pavement’ daily.
I intend to redeem the points I’ve earned on some Decathlon vouchers, to buy some new gym gear to celebrate the weight loss.
I started off as quite a slow walker but now I’m much faster. This has allowed me to target longer distances.
It has benefited my mental health too. Getting active allows me to switch off from work and clear my head.”
